What is communication? Communication is the act of conveying meanings from one entity or group to another through the use of mutually understood signs, symbols. In today’s world to function and be competitive communication skills are very important and they play a major role. Now the next question is what are communication skills? Communication skills are abilities you use when giving and receiving different kinds of information. Some examples include communicating ideas, feelings or what’s happening around you. Communication skills involve listening, speaking, observing and empathizing. It is also helpful to understand the differences in how to communicate through face-to-face interactions, phone conversations and digital communications, like email and social media. Few ways through which we could enhance our communication skills are:

Learn nonverbal communication

Adopt correct stance to connect simply and confidently. Should not slouch or spread your arms to make yourself look thinner than you are. Alternatively, fill in the space you are given, keep the eye contact and move around the space.

Engage in discussion with the audience

No matter how persuasive the speaker is, there are short periods of time for all the audiences. Make presentations and conversations interactive, to become a more successful communicator. Ask the group a question, allow participants during a brainstorming session to call out their thoughts or at least ask hypothetical questions to inspire the crowd.

Get to know your audience

To communicate effectively, it is important to get to know your audience first. Each audience is different, and will have different preferences and cultural norms that should be considered when communicating. A good way to understand expectations is to ask members of the audience for examples of good communicators within the organization.

Listen to your audience

Listen more than you speak. "Richard Branson says this to business people who want to communicate with others. First listen to what others have to say, in order to communicate effectively. You will then have a reflective response that demonstrates that you have taken those suggestions into consideration.

Start and end with key points

Think back to earlier described analysis of "tappers and listeners." Effective communication is vitally necessary. Reiterate key points at start and end to ensure the audience knows the key takeaways from a presentation. It can also be achieved by presenting a one-pager to passengers that provides important points that should be understood by the audience during the presentation.
